"Grandfathered salary"?

Simple question... what does "grandfathered salary" mean? Googled it but couldn't see anything relevant.

I think it usual means it is protected at an old rate even though the job may no longer command that salary.
Often done when jobs get a re grading to lower grades, you are protected till the rises catch up.0
