    All it is is that someone has messed up royally and they are trying to cover their backs. Just raise the internal grievance - nothing personal - you're not trying to kick up a fuss or cause any problems for anyone - all you want is to be treated fairly. Just ask for a copy of their grievance procedure from HR and make your case.
