A quick question please - I have completed my SA (yes, last minute - note to self to do it earlier next year ... again!) and it leaves the tax owing which is less than I paid on account this year - the "on account" doesn't seem to be being pulled through but appears elsewhere in the Self Assessment area. Am I safe to assume that I now pay the amount on account for next year? Also, as I overpaid by around £100 on account, do I take that off the first payment or I assume it is safer to pay the amount on account requested and it will then catch up on the mid-year statement?

    Many thanks

Once your SA for 2008-09 has been submitted, you can go into the accounts section and see what is on your account. That will tell you exactly what you need to pay. Sometimes it can take a little time (1-2 hours or even overnight) to update the accounts section. You could try logging out and back in again.

Yes .... if you're certain of your POAs total for last year. When you file online you're doing so into a dedicated system. The accounting data is held on the main SA system - in order hyperactivity on the online has limited effect..
The two only get together during an overnight Batch run. At which point your indebtedness for 08-09 is put on the main system and your payments are dragged back onto the online system to give you an updated net view. They are likely to be running Batch tonight .... so the net view (too late for you?) should be available tomorrow.

As regards the £100 .... depends how confident you are. If it's not a showstopper .... I would tend to pay it and let it net off the 31/7 payment.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
