For anyone planning to submit over the next few days, the paper tax return helpfully tells you that you can file online (as the deadline for paper was apparently 31 October) - when you try to do so (having registered previously for Government Gateway), it sends you an activation code by mail within the next seven days...

Fantastic :j

Yes, left it to the last minute (but still before the deadline) - not looking for any smart comments thank you, I am just posting in case anyone else hasn't got round to filing yet!

I see on another thread that if you pay any tax due by 31st January, even if you haven't filed, then no fine is payable, therefore all is not lost.

This is a common problem that effects people every year.

The plus is you can complete the return without the system being activated, you just can't submit it.

And put the details some where safe, you'll need them next year!

I tried that but the system just went to the Service Activation screen - it seems that you don't get beyond that screen.

    Many thanks

  • I actually requested my registration details over two weeks ago and they never even turned up, so I'm in the same position.

I spoke to HMRC and they say to re-request the registration, in the mean time, calculate my own tax and make the payment online through the HMRC web site before the 31st deadline. Then send an appeal letter for the fine that will turn up explaining that you've actually paid.

I'm not sure if that will work for you as you didn't register but I have found HMRC pretty good in the past if you write to them politely.
  • Same happened to me, I tried to log in on friday but couldn't, and got quite upset as I thought I would get a fine. Luckily since I don't have to pay any tax on my return this year, I'm ok, it seems.

If you calculated the tax correctly and paid it by the 31st, they will automatically reduce the fine, so no need to appeal.
