Problems with "Lost Bank Account"

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had a Woolwich Account on behalf of my son until he turned 18 (which happened last year). Not a great deal of money £1000 plus interest. No money has ever been withdrawn and the book has been in my father's safe until last year.

BBA say they cant find the account and directed me to Barclays. Barclays did a quick search and said it never existed (obviously the passbook I hold is a hologram). Barclays say it will take them six months to process a complaint and I should go back to BBA.

In the interim I have had to take out a loan as my son needed the money for a car.

Where do I go next. I have all paperwork (including a letter from Woolwich awarding shares in relation to the account when Woolwich went public.)

Why is everything so difficult....
