Unpleasant short term jobs/£

Options
Change of plan..

I'm in between career moves at the moment, and would like to save some money.

A couple of people have talked about jobs that are hard for a while but very well paid, like labouring contracts/long shifts or seasonal work in a chicken processing plant etc.

Any suggestions for where to look for this sort of thing? Or if anyone has any contacts for London/live in elsewhere?

Failing that, ideas for decently paid work that isn't office admin?

  • I used to work as a pool lifeguard. This may not sound too unpleasant but we used to refer to the role 'as toilet scrubbing whistle blower' - I'm sure you get the picture. It was commonly acknowledged that we got paid a slight premium for the fact that our job was sometimes horrible!

While the money was a bit better than most casual jobs, the main attraction for me at that time was that it is completely flexible. Most municipal pools don't require you to be qualified before starting (in my area at least), you can work nights, weekends, am or pm as you please and they were always desperate for staff, particularly over the summer. Typically I worked as a lifeguard and took another job as well, which can be helpful.

On the downside, it is awesomely boring work (also quite responsible which is a bad combination), I personally hated doing the cleaning and members of the public frequently treat you as if you are educationally sub-normal. But I stuck with it for six days a week for every uni holiday for four years so it can't be that bad! And you're never stuck in an office. There are often a lot of similar jobs associated with leisure centres (tournament supervisors, people needed to work on set-ups for concerts, shows etc) so you can often get a variety of experience which made it more interesting.

    Best of luck!

What about auxillary agency work at a hospital? Flexible hours and its good pay, expecially nights and weekends. You don't need alot of training. Its hard work but usually a good laugh :)

so did I! but you must have been in a different zone to me. Here it's about £5 an hour for cleaning the congealed body fat out of the sauna etc  :)

This is the agency we use

    http://www.medico-nursing.com/jobs_medico.asp

    or you could try

    BNA

    Nurses direct

Medico pay less than the other two. Or ring your local hospital and ask what nursing agency they use and ask for a telephone number.

It was a fiver an hour near me too .. but all the other non-qualification required jobs in Kidderminster paid the minimum wage at the time so we considered ourselves well off! And it was five years ago. Take your point though.

Plus re: the sauna... yuck yuck yuck... also, did you find yourself repeatedly moving hidden !!!!!! mags out of the sauna / steam room changing area? A particularly fun part of the job for an 18 year old girl, I thought. In our leisure centre we also had a little room where in theory you could check the underwater lights were working. In practice it contained a couple of old deckchairs, was known as 'the pervy room' (i'm not kidding), and gave the male lifeguards and technicians at the centre a good chance to ogle unsuspecting women's bottom halves. Nice!

    Sorry, totally off topic now...

    Good luck anyway!

Nah. I did find a half eaten seafood salad in the baths tho. Or maybe they were trying to release them back into the wild.
