Future Standards of Housing.....

Still a good idea Hames?!
no no we need the childless people to live in large detached houses as a reward for having no children and also because they will be the only ones to be able to afford
and families to live in the little boxes to discourage this behaviour
it sort of worked in the nineteenth century ok although the matter was helped by the periodic outbreak of cholera0 -
Tha land question seems to be a lottery for a few lucky farmers. Maybe when land is identified for housing it should be bought at agricultural prices, and sold off in plots to private buyers where anything within a certain size can be built, avoiding identikit estates. The big housebuilders have had their chance to solve the housing crisis, and failed completely.Been away for a while.0

Rents will then rise as there still will be a shortage of supply. What we need is a break on population expansion, I would rather that break be property prices than running out of food and water or energy to keep warm.0 -

America is full of "trailer parks", where people live in what are essentially portacabins, but with perfectly nice normal house interiors. Even in the colder climate states. Some, the "double wides", are as big as a small house here, with up to 3 bedrooms. But they are cheap. Far cheaper than houses.
Likewise, in America it is quite common for retirees to sell up the house, buy a Winnebago motor home, and travel the country for years, even decades, moving from the North to the South with the seasons. Such people are known as "snowbirds", and live a modern day Nomadic lifestyle.
In the Middle East, I have seen old hotels converted to "long stay suites", (a bedsit type of setup) where a bedroom/livingroom, ensuite bathroom, and small kitchenette, are rented out very cheaply on a weekly/monthly/quarterly basis. The same thing as renting a room, but without the hassles of a flatmate.
With regards to trailers in America there is a social stigma to them, trailer park trash as such and although not as pronounced there is a stigma here.
Selling up and driving around the country is feasible in America given its size. In Britain you would be done in a week."There's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist."
"I could play all day in my Green Cathedral".
"The Centuries that divide me shall be undone."

True, there is, but it's no worse than the stigma attached to Chavs in sink estates here.Selling up and driving around the country is feasible in America given its size. In Britain you would be done in a week.
ANd then you could take the ferry to france and start with Europe. WHich is big enough to keep you busy for years.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I think a better comparison would be council estate dwellers 30 years ago.
Being a chav is about what you are, not where you come from, plenty of chavs come from good homes and decent areas. Trailer park trash are that because of where they live, chavs are scum because of what they are.HAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »ANd then you could take the ferry to france and start with Europe. Well that requires us Brits to be a little less parochial"There's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist."

It's quite a narrow short minded view to try and curb population growth.
Indeed if you look statistically, there already has been historical deceleration in birthrate which has only recently started to increase.
Here's a link to the population and bear in mind part of the increase is down to people living longer
http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=wb-wdi&met=sp_pop_totl&idim=country:GBR&dl=en&hl=en&q=uk+population+statistics
If you look at the graph below, it would appear that the number of children born 6/7 years ago was much less than it had been in the previous 50 years.
It's only since then that birth's have increased.:wall:

I reckon that as this country gets more crowded more people will end up living in appatment blocks like in other crowded countries.
i can't see how else all these additional millions can be housed.0 -
As an older female, I just want security/safety, enough space to do the things one needs to in a house (sleep, sit, cook/eat, wash, store stuff). I want "quiet" enjoyment and to not feel threatened.
What your posting did was to mix up/confuse short-term solutions with long-term need. One can't easily be 95 and driving a Winnebago alone. If one retires at 66, then a trailer home will have gone past it's useful life (rendering you homeless) before you die. Yachts ... posh git.
Yes there are alternatives, but once you get older you'll realise how you need: to be/feel settled and safe.
You're still a young pup.0 -

Aren't the trailer parks the US equivalent of our traveller sites?
But then that is generally a lifestyle people are born to, are trailer parks in the US more about anyone who is down on their luck?
Love to be a snowbird:)0
