Question Re: Wage deductions

A few weeks ago Hubby's employer closed the workplace at lunchtime, and all the employees went with him to his mum's funeral/wake on that afternoon. (They were asked to drive for the family but turns out once they got there that they weren't needed)

Fast forward to pay day and everyone has been docked half a day's wage.

My question is: is this common practice for small businesses? OH hasn't long started so doesn't have a contract yet to check it, (he doesn't want to question it either in case he loses his job tbh) but people who have been there 10 years have been docked, so it's not like it's because he is new.

In all honesty, if he had known he was losing the pay, he would have came home and spent that time with his family instead of going to the funeral of someone he never even knew.

It sounds outrageous to me ...

If they were 'required' to go, then they were entitled to be paid.

If they were 'invited' to go, they should have had the option of declining and going home, and taking half a day's hit on the pay.

What do the people who've been there longer think about it?

It IS outrageous. If the employer did not open the work place, they should have been paid, regardless of whether they went to the funeral or went home.

LOL .. I'm usually an employer advocate on this forum, but even I think it's outrageous.

    Outrageous
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths

I'd check first that it wasn't a genuine mistake (grief can do that kind of thing to you...), and then challenge it to the fullest!
    £1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50600

HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500

    "3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600

I'd promise to stand by any of the 10 year chaps who wanted to challenge it, but not take the first steps myself if I'd only been there a few months. ;) However, if the 10 year chaps say this is the way things happen in this company, I'd be job-hunting before the next paycheque was due.

It is of course a strange way to remember your mother, by docking all your employees a half a days pay. "So did you hate your mother enough to dock us all half a days pay?" .... No, don't.

Perhaps it's his way of proving that the funeral costs are a business expense......

You never know with some employers........
