They can make a claim against his estate. If the debts were solely in his name and he had no assets then you don't have to pay.0

Hey hun, sorry for your loss. At this stage I would be focusing on taking each day as it comes.
You should also check with the jobcentre whether you would be entitled to any form of bereavement benefits

On the debt side of things, any debts in your husbands name would have to paid out of the estate. The estate is made up of any financial assets he had in his sole name, including property, cash, insurance policies, savings etc. If there is not enough money in the estate to pay off the debts then the debts are written off. You may just be asked to provide a copy of the death certificate.
If there are any joint debts then you would be liable for these solely, and would need to seek advice as to how to deal with these if they are causing you a problem.
I would suggest visiting your local CAB also as they will be able to put you in touch with local support groups to help you through the bereavment. The more people you can talk to about it the easier it will be to cope.Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043
Que sera, sera.

Basically as has been said if debt solely in his name you dont have to pay unless there is money in his estate to pay.

Sorry to hear about your loss, i remember a few years ago when my dad passed away so and the time it took to sort out the finances.
Firstly, you must gather what is in his name that makes the estate, i assume certain bank accounts and 1/2 house. These then pay his debts off in his name. Any money in your name is not to be used to pay his debts. If you have had joint accounts for everything i think you can do a 50/50 split like with the house.
If you get confused a local CAB might be a good idea.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

I'm really sorry for your loss.
I will just share my experience with you and hope it helps.
My Dad recently died and my Mum was going to pay his credit card bill and following the advice I read on hear I told her not as it was a debt of the estate.
She spoke to the card company who have special departments trained to deal with this who were really kind and then she passed the bill onto the solicitor who was dealing with the will.
Please speak to someone, national debtline or a citizens advice bureau debt adviser. You are not alone.
Please take care and look after yourself.
