Wages after being declared br

Options
Hi all,

I declared BR on 21st of Jan. I havent had my OR meeting yet.
I started work on the 4th Jan and had my first pay yesterday.
I checked my wage slip and ive been given a substantial PAYE refund.

It doesnt say 'nil' tax code anywhere

Is the PAYE refund anything to do with the BR? I mean the nill tax code thing do they just automatically take the tax themselves? Not sure if im explaining myself well lol

  • Ring the OR to check. My wage slip showed NT but it was 4 months after i went BR, if it is just a tax refund moon beever will see it when they request your wage slips. Ive found honesty is the best policy with the OR :)

They wont just take the tax, it goes straight to you with your wages, and you have to keep the tax aside and moonbeever will arrange to collect it from you

How long were you out of work before startin the new job? That might also account for a PAYE refund.

i was self employed from july till 21st of jan this year, though never made a profit....
il ring the OR im suprised it happened this quick so im certain its nothing to do with the OR.

Im scared to spend my own money to be honest. My scooter which i use alot to go to work, was involved in a crash, and i need to buy a new one.

Il ring the OR and ask them

Did you give them a P45 or sign a P46? If a P46, did you sign to say it was your first job in the tax year? That again can cause tax refunds. Speak to your OR though, as they will no doubt take an interest in a tax rebate.

That will be why, the PAYE refund will relate the the tax allowances since the leaving date on the P45 to starting the job.
