CGT reporting a loss

Options
Just filling in my SA for 08/09, and I have made a CG of 7000 on one disposal of shares and a capital loss of 5900 on a disposal of another sale of shares.
How do I put this on my SA in order to carry forward a loss for use in future years when perhaps I am able to make a profit!
Can I carry forward the 5900 or do I only carry forward the 1100 overall loss for this SA? I have read the help notes and can't find a clear answer!

  • If you made a profit of £7,000 on one disposal and a loss of £5,900 on another then you have made an overall profit of £1,100, not a loss. So nothing to carry forward.

Or is something wrong in your question?

You're absolutely right - my own stupidity!
In my normal day to day life I can function as a competent person - put me with a SA form and I can actually feel my brain cells shutting down! The adverts that say tax doesn't have to be taxing don't appreciate the panic that sets in from having to add up numbers and get them into the right boxes.

You have just cheered me up.

We all have those 'D'uh' days ...... it's just preferential not to have them when dealing with HMRC! (leave it to them, instead)
