Where are you staying? (the cost of food/drink etc is very likely to be higher in say, for example, Nusa Dua than a lot of other places).

There is a lot of relevant info on the Trip Advisor Bali forums.

OK, well we stayed 10 nights RO in Sanur followed by 4 nights B&B in Ubud last September, so if you bear with me, I have a pile of receipts and can give you a better idea later today (its cheap, so don't panic!!)

We ate and drank like kings, did lots of sightseeing and bought some gifts etc and I think for the pair of us I had allowed a budget of the equivalent of £50 a day (so £700 total) and we came back with quite a bit left over!

Was at bali for 3 nights over xmas. We stayed at Nusa Dua. We just ate in the hotel at night as were quite happy to do that for a short period. The prices were £33 to £45 for 2 with wine for our evening meals. You probably find a bit cheaper elsewhere.Really depends on what you are ordering as well. Think Ive calculated it right. Funny funny money lol.

dont worry, we couldnt throw our money away in bali, we went for a week before traveling to australia in 2007, we even went to the hard rock cafe and had a 3 course meal plus a couple of drinks for less than £30 for the pair of us, (compar that to costs in the western branches of the chain you realise how cheap it is!) Also if you go to hard rock there is a market on the beach opposite and is an amazing spot for watching the sunsets (even beat the sunset over ayres rock)

dont forget though, to have $25 us dollars each for your entry visa when you arrive at the airport customs (may have changed but it had to be in us dollars and new not torn dollar bills in 2007)

We stayed in Seminyak and had a great time,
    MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..

As promised earlier, here is some info from last Sept/Oct.

The exchange rate at the PO today for Indonesian Rupiahs is around 14,000 to the £1, we took a mixture of cash in sterling and US$ (which we had anyway), debit and credit cards but the exchange rate was more favourable once in Bali rather than changing money here.

If you read the TA forums you will see plenty of advice re: moneychangers; we were lazy and changed cash at the hotel reception and tbh there was really very little difference in the rates between there and the moneychangers (some of whom can be dodgy) anyway.

All prices are in IDR and are the inclusive total for two people. Just to confuse matters, some places add a combination of tax and service charge (21%), some places advertise tax and no service charge and some advertise a fully inclusive price! It all sounds a bit mad but when you realise that you are often only talking about a £1 or two here or there you realise that in most instances its not worth worrying about! Many places also offer 'happy hours' so you can wander up and down the beachfront promenade or the 'strip' in Sanur and use this to your advantage!!

In Sanur we were on RO at the Griya Santrian and never bothered with breakfast, but a lunch with beer and a couple of soft drinks ranged from around 100,000 at a cafe/restaurant on the beach to 170,000 in our beachfront hotel; prices on the 'strip' were cheaper. (NB: room service prices at our hotel did not carry a premium - useful for the midnight munchies before you get used to the time difference, lol!)

Dinner, involving one main course, sometimes a starter or sweet, several large Bintang beers and several cocktails ranged from around 200,000 at a cafe/restaurant on the beach to 300,000 in our beachfront hotel; again prices on the 'strip' were cheaper. We had main meals from as little as 25,000 each on the 'strip' (and this was in a 'proper' eaterie rather than a roadside stall) but to be honest, as the difference in price was so negligible (to us) we preferred to eat the fabulous food in our hotel, alone under their private gazebo on the beach every night watching the sun set!

There is a good supermarket on the 'strip' in Sanur called Hardy's, it is within walking distance of many hotels and I believe many others also offer free shuttle buses, local taxis are also cheap and readily available. Some prices from here are:

    1.5l bottle mineral water 2,400
    1.5l bottle sprite 12,000
    330ml can soft drink 6,000
    0.7l bottle local gin 130,000
    20 Marlboro's 10,000

Prices in Ubud do vary but we had an evening meal out a few times with a couple of drinks and this averaged 150,000 to 200,00. Helpfully, some restaurants also provide a free taxi back to your hotel after your evening meal.

We stayed at the Maya Ubud and the prices there were double, but for the quality of food on offer and the standard of the hotel I did not feel that this was expensive; they also offered 'happy hour' drinks and meal specials too.

I hope this helps, if you need any info regarding trips - how to and what to see, I found the TA forums packed full of useful information; I also found the Lonely Planet guide very good but if you get stuck give me a shout!

Happy holidays, we will definitely be returning to Bali at some point as it suited us perfectly!

As previously mentioned you will need US$ or the equivalent for your entry visa (cost dependant on duration of stay), also keep aside IDR cash for your departure tax.

Is it possible to get a return flight from Manchester to Bali (or if not to Jakarta) for less than £450.00.

Travel time early July until Mid August (return).
