JSA: Weekly Sign On + Training Grant

Hey MSE'ers

I have been on JSA now for 13 weeks and just had my 3 month review - everything went fine and they was happy with what I was doing etc. At my next 'sign on' I was told that I would now have to come in weekly to 'sign on' rather than every fornight.

Does anyone know the circumstances in which this would happen?

I did try asking but she just said its the way the system works, however, upon googling it I havent found any mention of a weekly sign on.

Also I am looking at going on a project management training course. I have been told they can provide up to £300, does anyone know where I can find more info out about this? Then I can stick to my guns and know what I am entitled to when I ask.

Thanks

not sure never heard of it!
Maybe they are trying to keep better track of what you are doing/put you under more pressure etc?

    What do you think?

No idea?! If its more pressure then thats not going to work...

They never seem bothered when I go in, dont even look at my log! They just sign it and I leave...its just a pain in the bum having to now go in every week.

Was there anything mentioned about "New Deal"? I've been on JSA for 6 months now and changed to New Deal a few weeks ago, and now I see my personal advisor every week where we go through jobs they have on their system.

I still sign on fortnightly, just see the advisor every week.

Nope, nothing about New Deal although I have heard the term in the press recently. Maybe I will push them to tell me on my next 'sign on' - I know people who have been on JSA for ages and they still only have to turn up once a week :S

    Strange...and annoying, lol

Everyone has to sign on weekly after their thirteen week interview, I believe it is for six weeks (though I'm not 100% sure on that). It is compulsory.
    Gone ... or have I?

Yea, a friend of mine had to switch to weekly for 6weeks after a while, cant remember why exactly, but then went back to fortnightly. There was no difference, just that it was weekly.

what age are you, because 18-24 years olds and now required to sign on weekly rather than fortnightly. This is because there is a crack down on 18-24 years old unemployed

After 13 weeks of signing and their 13 Week Review most customers are case-loaded with an advisior for weekly signings, after a while it reverts back to fortnightly, its pretty standard and designed to help guide them/provide more support, such as a vacancy search and so forth.

My Husband has just had to go on this. Though not sure why since Im working now so he could potentially stop signing if he decided to. I think its just to make sure you do a job search and that little more pressure on you lol. They offered him help towards going on a course and said they think he should go to college, alright for them to say but not alright for our pockets!
