Haggling advice please?!

Options
I have a budget of £250 to buy an industrial sewing machine, i have seen one on the net for £269+vat.I won't be able to afford it at that price as i will have extra's to buy! i want to ask for a discount when i go to the suppliers,so i am in need of your haggling tips and advice.

I would be really grateful if you could give me some ideas and advice on how to go about this, discount in money or extra things thrown in the price would be great help but WHERE/WHAT/HOW do i start??????

Just to let you know you are dealing with the most unconfident person in the world when it come to haggling so please be gentle.:o:rotfl::o:rotfl::o

  • When you go there have a look at the machine that you are interested in and then ask if they have any similar machines for a lower price, for example £200.

Then state that you like that machine but only have so much to spend. Be confident when you speak and maybe crack a few jokes about anything, recession, budget etc..

You will be surprised how some companies will lower their prices when asked especially in this current climate.

I have literally haggled all my life and in the process bought many items at vastly reduced prices.

Don't forget the worst they can do is refuse
  • Also be a good idea to take cash with you too, and make it known that you are willing to pay cash, although you will not then get the protection you receive when using a credit card, it does cost money for the retailers to process the card payments.

You might even be able to get them to throw in those extras you are after, get chatting with them and tell them what you want to do with it and what else you need to buy.

The most important thing - start with a smile!

If they won't give you what you are after, and you are the only one there (may not work if they have other customers), politely decline their last offer and walk away - if they are desperate they may go that extra mile to make a sale. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ARE WILLING TO NOT BUY THE MACHINE - YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO KEEP WALKING!!!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

I have always found the best way is to hesitate and go to leave and then say, confidently and friendly - "What is your best price on it today please?". This is better than asking for a discount because they still save face by being the one to state an acceptable price and you have intimated you will buy it then and there if its reasonable.. It normally works. Even better, take a little note book with you and write down the price and stuff as though you are going to go and compare prices. Then do your hesitating and query :)

i tend to work out how much i want to spend and go in a bit lower and usually end up at what i want to pay! but as has already been said you need to be willing to not buy it and walk away if its not the right price for you.
I can also be a bit of a coward and tell them i need to think about it and then phone later in the day to haggle as i find it easier than face to face:o its worked every time for me so far
