Are these hair straighteners any good?

Decided I should actually make an effort wih my appearance, so gonna buy some hair straighteners since I've used my friends and they work well.

Thing is, they are all so confusing, ceramic plates, solid ceramic plates, floating plates....... and the costs vary dramatically!

Seen these on boots website which tempt me;
I like the fact that they have an extra long lead, and that they are reduced so much, but are they solid ceramic, were they just so expensive because they are 'retro'?

Sorry for all the silly questions but its quite a lot of money for me to spend and I just can't decide. Thing is i spotted these before Christmas and liked the look of them, then they disappeared from the site until recently, so don't want to end up missing them again! :-/

Decisions decisions....any advice welcome!

  • Hi Maddie,

I straighten my hair a few times a week - don't claim to be an expert, but I believe the ceramic plated ones are meant to be pretty good. Mine have a long cable (as do the ones you're interested in) and that is invaluable, as you need to put them somewhere safe while they heat up and cool down.

I'd look to see if they have safety guards/ shields as it's sooo easy to get your fingers near the plate while you're straightening - ouch! :-[

I read somewhere that you should only straighten your hair when it is bone dry - otherwise it 'fries' your hair. Don't know if that is true, but if it is I can't understand why there are a lot of steam straighteners and wet to dry straighteners on the market

Anyway, those look okay to me :)

My sister swears by her GHD (Good Hair Day) straighteners, but they are very expensive.

I use Good Hair Day straighterners, which are excellent. I have had them a couple of years and they are the only ones that have ever worked for me. However, there are now many other ceramic ones on the market which may be as good. My hairdresser will only use the same ones as me.

my friend is a hairdresser n told me the best thing is to buy them direct from a hair dresser suppliers outlet

i picked some up (the same ones my salon uses) for £30.00.
my sis has GHDs and I would say that mine are just as good ;)

the higher the temperature the better they work,
and i would personally stay away from ceramic plated, i bought some before i knew better n they are useless n lying in my bottom drawer.

those ones you are looking at from boots look really good for £30 - they heat up to 215 degrees which is excellent

    ;D

Good Hair Day straighteners are ceramic. I use the irons and not the plates. Apparently ceramic ones are better for your hair and do leave my hair looking very shiny and healthy and not at all dried out.

Thanks for all the advice, looks like they get the thumbs up then!

So stay away from ceramic plated, but are the ones I found ceramic plated, because it does not say they are solid ceramic?

I think I should hurry up and make my mind up before they run out! ::)

    Thanks again,
    Maddie

    Hi sunflower

That's kind of my problem, I already have very straight hair! But when I've used my friends straighteners, they've made my hair look really neat and 'sharp' if that makes sense. This is what I want them for, so that I can look like I've made a bit of an effort....also my boyfriend would like some to play with and style his hair! :-X

    Hi Maddie

If they haven't got the ones you want, I got some new ones from Boots just before christmas..

They are the slimline Mark Hill ones and if i remember rightly, they were reduced from about £70 to £40. I'm really pleased with them and they're definitely better than the cheaper pair I had before.
