in Cutting tax
Just gone to pay the tax due following my self-assessment (daft to leave it so late, I know). It's due by the 31st - so does anyone know if Billpay payments through HMRC website will be quick enough if I pay tonight?
Also, if the payment is late, am I right in thinking I only pay interest on it? http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/deadlines-penalties.htm#6 The payment due is only a couple of hundred - so even if it arrives several days late this will cost me less than a phone call to HMRC.

Yes. Billpay (A&L) send an electronic file to HMRC each evening and that's updated into SA each night. You could pay on Sunday and still be in time as they provide an effective date of payment in the file. Butthat is cutting it a bit fine ... as all systems will be a bit busy.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
If you use Billpay website then theday you pay is the effective date.
The money may not debit from your account automatically but you will receive a receipt number which will correspond to the time/date submitted.

I used BillPay on Friday 22nd - it's been a bit nerve-wracking because my online banking didn't update to show the money as coming out until Tuesday 26th, and the HMRC website didn't update to show it as paid until today (Thursday), but they've put the date as payment made on the 22nd.0
