Self employment and tax year returns

I have found out that I have made a loss, does this effect last years maintenance payments or the one comming up?

PWC (mother - wimmin) made a variation application for the year 08-09. Due to various reasons the CSA only contacted me in Oct 09 but wanted my P&L accounts for 08-09, I informed them that I had made a loss in the year 08-09 and that I had only just completed my return.

After lengthy conversations I submitted returns, the variation (by mother) failed but I have been told that as I have only told them in Oct 09 that I have made a loss in 08-09 that they will only alter my maintenance payment from the Oct that I informed them.

Can this be right? surely self employed work a year behind, so in effect if I made a loss in 08-09 but have paid previous years calculation then I have overpaid for that year?

But no says the case worker, because I have not informed them of a change in circumstance they can only alter the maintenance due from the date I informed them!!!!!

But if mothers application had succeded then they would have made me pay the arrears

How can this be so?
Relativity - the study of relativity will reveal that time passes through all points simultaneously prooving that space and time are entirely reletive depending on who is asking the question and what answer you want to give.

Space is not merely slightly curved it can be bent to touch itself without breaking the rules of relativity. :rotfl:

sounds about right. i would complain to my MP and point out the "one rule for pwc and one rule for nrp" stance of the agency.

i'd also be making sure 09 was in the red too. ;)

    Hi

When dealing with the csa or common sense and logic goes out the window

When you are self employed they should take your last years accounts to work out maintenance.

Many businesses big and small whether they be sole trader, limited or partnership can and do make losses.
Making a loss isn't the main cause of business failures, the main reason for business failures lack of cash flow.
So it is possible for a businessman to have no income for some periods of time, and would have to borrow from one source, another.

Change of circumstance according to the CSA would be your change of income level, but for most businesses this would change from week to week.
When did your year end? for 08/09
    Teacher 1+2 = 3
    CSA 1+2 = 30,000

If they asked you to submit accounts at the time, then you would be right, but if you submitted the information off your own bat, then they are correct in not making any changes until the date that you notified them.
