Verbal offer of employement

Hi Guys,
As reported previously my job is under threat of redundancy. But luckly, I have been verbally offered another position. Only temporary, but it is better than the position I currently find myself in.
Possible future employer has asked me to start in a weeks time, my contract with current firm is to give one months notice.
I have spoken to my current employer, they are ok for me to finish earlier, but this will be reflected in my final wages, which I kind of guessed.
But I have only given verbal possible notice, I have not given current employer my resignation letter until I have contract with new employer. Should this verbal offer go south, can my current employer force me to continue with my notice even though it was only a verbal in a form of a chat and not in letter form (Offical) .
I have no doubt the offer is a geunine one, I am just covering all basis, I am a bit of a freak like that.
Regards

Ask for a written formal offer from your new Employer via e-mail, then give your current Employers your resignation letter saying as discussed with X I am hereby giving my X days notice.0

There's an old legal saying for this
"Oral Contracts Are Not Worth the Paper They're Written On"
get it vailidated before putting your notice in0 -
I have emailed company this morning, and awaiting return reply.
Thanks for your thoughts.0 -
Ensure the offer is unconditional.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

Good advice ohreally!
There are lots of threads from people who received a conditional offer which did not go through because of problems with references, sickness record etc, and who found themselves out of work because they had already given notice.0
