in Cutting tax
Just a quick question that I wonder if anyone could help with.
I've completed my self-assessment for the past tax year - in fact I did it ages ago - but I was holding off submitting and paying it because one of my former employments (that ended Dec 08) never provided me with a P45. I've chased and chased and chased, but they are a terrible organisation (which is why I left) and all of their accounting team have resigned. In fact, there are only two people left, both of whom are unable to provide confirmation of my earnings.
I don't have any payslips (was never given any) and they aren't able to assist.
From my perspective it doesn't matter too much as I know what I earned so I can work out roughly what tax and student loan I paid - so on my self-assessment I can just put an estimate (and it won't affect what I need to pay as full tax/NI came out while I was there I'm sure).
But, how can I compel this company to provide me with what I need? I've given them a year already but no joy...

By law your employer is required to supply this information. TBH if you weren't given any payslips I would find this employer very dodgy - but then that could be the cynic in me.
The tax office can advise how much NI has been paid but they don't have a copy (or wont supply) your P45 details. Possibly contact your local dwp for more info.0 -
They were really dodgy...which is why I left! It was only a very small company but very badly managed. The accounts team were perfectly legitimate though (it was a couple of contractors) but they stopped working for them when they weren't paid.
So, only two people are left working there - one's the receptionist and the other is the corrupt manager and neither understand how accounts work...I predict it'll be wound up in 2010.
I know how long I worked there (exactly three months) and how much I earned, so from that I can work out tax, NI and student loan paid. This won't affect my self-assessment fortunately as all my deductions were made correctly, so the amount I owe HMRC from self-employment remains unaffected, but it's still good to have this information otherwise I'm going to have to put this as an 'estimate' rather than fact.0 -
if you didnt get payslips, how do you know your deductions were correct. How are you going to work back up from a net to a gross figure - even PAYE experts would struggle with this.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

It's easy.
I only worked there for three months. I'd already earnt above the threshold for my tax-free allowance for the year.
You can easily reverse-engineer your salary using listentotaxman.com.
Deductions were correct because my nett salary matches the listentotaxman figures, so it would only be wrong if my gross was incorrect (which I doubt they'd get wrong!)0 -
How much was your official gross salary? How much did you get paid net? Have you got these payments in your bank account? If you deduct the NI, which you can get from a table, from the difference, then the student loan, the remainder is the tax paid. Are you sure that deductions were actually made?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Hi,
I don't know if this will help but i work as an accountant & complete tax returns for clients. I had the same problem this week & called the clients tax office. They provided me with the information needed. Just have your UTR no & NI no to hand when you call.0 -

I don't know how they provided the information to you, but if any advisor gave you the P45 details over the phone, they would be facing disciplinary action.
I hope (for their sake ) they sent the information in a letter.He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Thanks for all your replies. I spoke to the tax office and they said they will send all this information in a letter for me. If it doesn't get there in time then just put estimates against the employer ref and that will be fine (then login and update once filed).
I'm quite tempted to report my old employer actually as they are particularly useless and have no sense of keeping records.0
