DVD Recorder

Options
Hi , a quick tale . . .

I was offered . . "would you like one for Christmas" . . a base model DVD recorder, one of the own brand 120ish quid model.

I thought I could find a better model and pay the extra, so my search was on! I Googled, I Kelkood, I read reviews, I tried every electrical retailer in my local area and eventually decided on a Panasonic, a DMRE65EBS. I chose this one for several reasons, features and price included.

The best price I found was from Richersounds, their price online is £229.95, but there was no option to order this model online. I went to my local branch in Bristol, the instore price is/was 249 plus change, I thought I'd either got the price wrong or I'd remembered the price from a different web store, so I went home. I know I should have asked but hind sight . . . etc.

Anyway I checked online when I arrived home, then called the branch, they said they would honour any online price on their website, that was current when I returned to the shop.

I called into my local Currys super store, they have a price match, well so I thought? They have the same model for £399+chge!!! They said they couldn't match it?? Oh well, their loss.

I returned to Richersounds, bought the DVDR and they offered me a 3yr warranty, now I'm not a warranty man normally, as they are a rip off! IMHO. ;) But this was only 30quid and if I don't claim I just return the card to Richersounds and they'll give me my 30quid back, cash out of the till.

To summarise . . . tips if you like . . .

Richersounds (Bristol) ~ Top people, helpfull staff, on the phone and in store. They were quick to answer the phone too, and it's a local number direct ot the branch, not a head office or a 087* number.

The online price may be cheaper, quote it in store to get it.

The warranty may be refundable, worth asking if they don't offer.

Currys price match . . er . . doesnt! ::) ;D

I hope there is something usefull in this post for someone.

Martin started a thread entitled "Great DVD Recorder Hunt' which is on page 2 at the moment, with loads of messages on this very topic. You make some good points but, personally, I wouldn't spend more than £120 - for only £109 at Argos before Xmas I bought a Liteon 5005 DVD recorder (hardly 'own brand, more 'leading' brand!) which is so good, I wouldn't want to pay a penny more. If money is no object, though, the Panasonic machines do have an excellent reputation.
  • Just wondering if you work for Liteon? ;D

No I don't work for Liteon or have any connection with them whatsover. I'm just a very happy customer. The DVD recorder was the first Liteon product I've ever bought.

As Andrew, and perhaps others, are clearly irritated by the number of times I refer to this deck, I will now refrain from any further postings, advice or suggestions on Liteon DVD recorders.

If you had come here sooner you could have got the Panasonic 55 at Boots for £169 with loadsa points. :'(

  • Hi folks,

I've been a lurker here for a long time, I have followed the DVD threads, but they always seam to be about base models or own brands. The liteon may well be a competant machine for the money, but it has it's limitations.

Some reasons for chosing Panasonic, and in particular the 65 over the 55, included, the fact it had a card reader for my cameras, it can also record DVDRam, it has the Time Slip-function, you can record and watch on and from the same disc at the same time, you can record a program and then watch it from the begining before the recording has stopped. :)

I would do a search on Google for reviews of DRDR drives, then once you have some ideas of which models you like the specs of, search for the best price.

I take it that with it being from Richer Sounds it's also multi region as well? That's worth between £30 & £50. IMHO you've made an excellent choice
