i desperately need a debit/credit card machine for accepting payments into my business but have poor credit history my bank account is a very basic one. had no joy from my own bank nat west. can anyone advise me

Sorry, I don't know how your credit history potentially affects the situation, but maybe a non-bank independent provider is the way to go? -- others will know better than I would.
No knowledge of them personally, but seen Accept Cards mentioned quite a few times in threads on Small Biz, another of the MSE boards:

You are credit scored for StreamLine and with Barclays they can ask for a deposit or retain funds for like 30 days before releasing to you.
Consider Worldpay/Google/PayPal etc - these are dearer, but in time you'll be able to prove to the likes of Streamline that you can be trusted.
Remember, these PDQ's (or terminals) are lethal in the wrong hands, if you can do CNP transactions then if you have a batch of credit cards you could refund your own cards via streamline and then make your business account overdrawn etc... they are easy to abuse so you get credit scored/searched.2010 - year of the troll
