Nearly 4 years ago I was a witness for the NHS in a fraud case. The case has now come before the NMC (nursing and midwifery council).I have had an e-mail stating that I have to attend, to be available for 5 days and stay in hotel.
I have two small children and no childcare, ive never left them before.the hearing is in london. Can they make me attend?

Not sure about making you attend, but you need to speak to them to explain your situation and find out if a written statement will suffice.0

As a witness there may be provisions for expenses, hotel, childcare, meals etc so you could possibly take the kids. They may also allow evidence to be taken via video link, telephone etc.
Have you asked them?0 -
2 reasons you might be compelled
- If they have legal power to compel witnesses - I am not sure about this
- If you are a registered person over whom they have jurisdiction [even if the hearing is not about you

OP, are you a member of the NMC?
If you are I suspect you have to attend as part of your registration / NMC T&Cs.

Certainly the General Medical Council could - or come to that the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons! Their hearings have the same powers as the High Court!
I'm not certain if this extends to nursing and other medical bodies but I think it may well.0 -

If they have the same powers as the GMC you could end up in jail!0 -
