Rainchecks

I was in MrA this evening and they had run out of two offers (well one actually I just misread the ticket :o). I spoke to 5 different employees including customer services and the store manager who didn't know what on earth I was talking about when I asked for a raincheck voucher.

What are they called and how do I make sure that I get one next time?

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

This rang a bell so I made a search & found this:
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cheap-supermarket-shopping
    • "Ask for a raincheck voucher.
If a special offer item is out of stock, some supermarkets will give you a voucher entitling you to the same deal at a later date.
      • Tesco 'Special Promise' vouchers. Some Tescos hand out 'Special Promise', also known as raincheck, vouchers when special offer products are out of stock. This policy goes way back and many old shop assistants still give them out, yet newer staff haven't heard of them. Try your luck and explain at the customer services desk that you want a voucher, to take advantage of the deal at a later date.

      • Asda 'Smiley' vouchers. Asda staff are allowed to give out 'Smiley' vouchers for up to £1, when a customer's had a problem or just becase they feel like it. One of these reasons is that a special offer product's out of stock. Vouchers are at shop assistant's discretion, so don't be demanding, yet a friendly smile goes a long way.

      • Sainsbury's 'Special Coupons'. If a special offer's run out, Sainsbury's shop assistants dish out 'Special Coupons', allowing you to buy the same product from a different brand, at the special offer price. Again, it's at the shop assistant's discretion and some haven't heard of them, but MoneySavers report that politely explaining about the coupons can help. Coupons must be used on that day"

My local Tesco, however, denied all knowledge of any such system - & nothing on the website either.

Ah - so that's why they thought I was mad!! It's called a "smiley"! Do people actually ask for these? What is the response generally?

  • they do this in my local co-op but if you ask in Asda you just get looked at as if you are on the make

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • I know Tesco used to do them, as my Mum worked on the customer service desk. I'm sure they were called raincheck vouchers but I've not seen anything about them in the last couple of years.

    It's only a game

I had to go to customer services last year when something on special offer was unavailable. I asked for a raincheck voucher and she gave me a handwritten thing that I could use next time the items were in stock. She knew exactly what I was talking about as soon as I mentioned it.
  • tesco still do them. go to customer services and ask for a Special Offer Promise Voucher. They should only give them out on offers where you fall short of an item, e.g. if something is BOGOF and there is one on the shelf. They wont normally hand them out if something is £1, half price, as all offers are subject to stock and they dont need to.

    Hope this helps
