Southern Electric 'salesman' posing as meter reader

Yesterday my 90 year old mother, who lives in Enfield answered the door to what she thought was a meter reader. He wore Southern Electric logos. He read the meter and then told her she was being overcharged. She told him she was with Eon. He said that they had taken over eon and were now reading the meters for them. He again told her she was being overcharged and said to sign a paper to get £30 pounds back. She did.
She was unsure about this once he left and has cancelled the transfer and informed eon, british gas and BT.

It is a shrewd move. It proves she is dotty and the doorstep salesman should never have sold to her.

Note that if she is on E-on's standard tariff then she probably is being 'over-charged'. Not condoning the scum, but do make sure she is on a reasonable tariff.
