in Cutting tax
Hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone is aware of any council tax exemptions that i may be entitled to. I have recently had to move to surrey for my work and rent a flat but i will still have my parents house as my actual address because the move is only for 4-5months, and i will return after this placement is over. Can anyone help with any info?
Regards

Your landlord might be collecting the tax on behalf of the council (you don't say what your rental arrangements are) otherwise you must pay the council tax. If you are the sole occupant you will get a 25% discount.
The landlord will "dob you in" so expect a visit from a man with a clip board - most councils run an efficient department for collecting council tax - funny that.0 -
Be wary of renting a flat which is claimed to have a rent inclusive of Council Tax, if the money fails to reach the council it is you they will come after. In the hierarchy of liability the occupier of the dwelling is at the top of the tree.
You will be responsible for paying CT for the time you occupy or are entitled to occupy a dwelling. As J_P says if you are a single occupant you will get 25% discount. If you are on a low income you may be entitled to CT benefit, check council's website for details.
Always pay your CT on time, failure to do so could result in court summons and associated costs. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Lincroft1710 is spot on. Unless the property falls under council tax (liability of owners) regs 1992 the occupier will fall liable for the council tax (unless the person you rent off is also resident) regardless of any agreements made with the L/L.
I see a large number of cases where people have paid the L/L for inclusive bills and then later had to make up the council tax once we have billed them for it.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Sorry i meant to say the council tax payment is not included in the rent agreement, so i pay that to the council seperatley on my own behalf0
