in Cutting tax
Good Morning everyone
As a private tutor I know that I could claim for millege, paper, ink, books, printer( moblie phone?) but as i work at home during the day lanning can I claim for broadband, heating and electricity I read some where that you can claim a proportion of you gas/electricity bill-is that true? Additionally, is there any thing else that I could claim for?
Thanks in advance

If you use part of your home as an office or place of work, you can claim a proportion. Don't count bathroom and kitchen, count the other rooms and take the relevant percentage. If you have 4 rooms for example, and one is obviously where you work, then 25% is a reasonable claim if you spend a lot of time in the 'office'.
Electricity, gas, water, council tax, mortgage interest and service charges all count as running costs. A similar rule applies to telephones and internet: can you estimate how much is spent on business? There is also the question of the various types of insurance.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Thank you for the quick reply!
I live in a two bedroom house, one of the rooms is my office. Taking into account after the kitchen and the bathroom are not included would it still be 25% or 1/3 for the electricity/gas?
For the internet and phone, I would say that I use these over 50% for my work. So that would be 50% of the monthly bills.
I know council tax and water are running costs, but as a general rule of thumb how much should I be claiming for please?
Thanks again0 -
You split all the household running costs in proportion to the number of rooms.
Things like phone and internet, you use your judgement and be prepared to justify it if challenged.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
