I boil a can of condensed milk in a pan of boiling water for 3 hours
If you look at the tins very carefully is very large supermarkets, there's a "caramel" version of condensed milk where this has already been done for you, so you simply open the can.

This caramel version is also available in a bottle, so you just pour it out. The tin is 397grams, the tube is 425grams.

    For 6 with 30 quid

Starter - some kind of soup with ideally whoops veg - if all else fails, carrot and coriander or leek and potato are pretty cheap to make. with HM bread or whoops is even better

Main - some kind of pasta bake, shepherds pie or spaghetti bolognaise. All good pub grub ideas, serve with HM potato wedges for the bake, HM garlic bread for the bolognaise or whoops veg for the pie.

Pudding - bread and butter pudding, Jelly and icecream, HM choc mousse, whoops cheat freezer pudding

Should leave enough for beer and wine if you stick to special offers and own brands

Soup is really cheap as a starter- Spicy tomato soup- chilli flakes, carrot, onions, potato, tinned tomato's, garlic, stock.
    Serve with crusty bread

Main course as said previously- Beef bourguignon. Veg + mash
    .

    Dessert- Fruit crumble with custard/cream
  • There is a dinner party four four for £10 at the moment.
    nov grocery challenge, £.227.69/300, 9/25 nsd: , 7 Cmo, 10 egm.
Me, 10 yo dd, and the dog. all food and drinks, in and out, plus household shopping.
  • Some great ideas here - pate is always posh, yet really cheap if you make a liver pate. Make melba toast to go with it (oldish bread, toasted, split in half, then retoasted until dry in the oven). (Thanks to nickynackyloo for the ideas). Should cost less than £2. If you make a banoffee pie, that would be about £3, leaving £15 for quite a nice bit of meat or fish for the main. OR - pea or lettuce soup are easy, even cheaper and not an everyday thing, so impress your guests.

I love the boeuf bouguignon and pheasant casserole ideas, or how about a real old fashioned steak and kidney pudding? (Or steak and mushroom if you don't like offal.) Nice recipe at http://britishfood.about.com/od/recipeindex/r/stkidpudd.htm and of course you will drink the rest of the wine!
