Hairdressing College: Do you tip?

Hi everyone,

I'm having my first appointment to have my hair cut at a College and I don't know if you're supposed to tip, or not? Can anyone tell me what they've done or what they know of it? Has their experiences been good?

Bump. Moved to page 2 already. :o Hope someone can help. :)
  • I go to a training school for a smart designer chain of local hairdressers to get mine done, it costs £10 and I usually give a £2 tip unless I've really not been impressed with what they've done and I've paid but not tipped (only happened twice).

    Hope that helps a bit.

I used to go to a hairdressing college salon and if I was happy I used to tip. I never had a bad cut there, in fact I had some of the best cuts I ever had there! Plus a wash, cut and blow dry was only £6 so I used to give a £2 tip usually.

God I wish I lived there now! Our local college hairdressing & beauty salon is pretty rubbish. I've just rung to get an appointment for a facial and the earliest they can get me in was 11th March :(

Thank you both. I really appreciate that - very helpful. I look forward to going and hope my hairdresser is good. ;) I guess it depends on how long they've been practising for too.

That's a shame about you having to wait that long. I'm not sure if there is a beauty college near here, or if the hairdresser's has one, that's something to think about too. :D

The college I'm going to costs £6 too and I'm thinking of having my hair colour done there too (they say all over colour for long hair costs £25!). I'm terrible at colouring my own hair. I'm always putting it off. :p

    Thanks again. :)

P.S. Do you think it would be okay if I brought in photos? I'm not very good at describing a look to someone, much easier just showing it.
  • I was that learner once ha ha, and yes take in photos if you are bad at descriptions, just dont expect an exact replica........ I loved tips because I was always so broke and it helped make the training much easier, its also a nice appreciation of the sweat I had put into making you happy........ Expect to be there for a couple of hours too, dont put the poor trainee under more pressure by having a deadline to get out, they may have a few waits for someone to check what they are doing and that can take time, good luck.........
