Hi im wondering if anyone could tell me what a letter of application is. Im applying for a job and it is asking for a letter of application as well as the application form, is the application letter just a cover letter or should it just say i would like to apply for X job. Reason I ask is that I've not done a letter of application before.
I appreciate any help

Edit: Of course that means it should be tailored to job etc if that isn't clear
so just a cover letter then, i keep it short and sweet right as the cover letter i have used before explains why i would be suitable for the job but it does it need to contain that info if its already on the application form0 -
I don't know what others think, but I would use the covering letter to perhaps highlight my skills that are most relevant to the job in question, and provide some more detail that you may have been unable to put on the application form due to space restrictions.0

so highlight various skills which are relevant to the job even if ive included them on the application form

and also link it to the job advert, as if there looking for team building for example, then highlight you built this from x,y and z (like team building days, working as part of a team when working in a store as 2 examples)
write it as ...
dear...
I am writing in regards to your vacancy .... advertised in ..... I have decided to apply as I think I can help benefit your business by (then insert in here the part of what they are looking for and how you can benefit the role by linking it to what you have done)
I look forwards to hearing from you soon.
Yours Faithfully

I'd definitely highlight the relevant skills, even if they're on the form - I think HR peeps will look over the covering letter first and then only look at the forms for the candidates they think will be on the shortlist.
Of course, they'll also have to consult with the relevant manager(s) who you could be working for as well, but at least they'd have a smaller set to go through: for example, instead of (say) 1,000 applications, they may whittle it down to about 200 using this system.
There are some places that still ask for a covering letter and an application form, but the managers who are actually looking for staff just ignore the cover letter and look at the form as it tells them more.0 -
If it helps its a job as an IT techy in a school0
