Credit score / applying for mortgage

Am planning to apply for a mortgage shortly. I have just cleared some large credit card balances, which I presume would have had an impact on my credit score, as the balance was about 22k. Never had a problem making payments or paid any late, so I've got no black marks against me on that score.

I probably know that answer to the question already, but is it worth me waiting for the "news" of my now nil balances on the cards to filter through to the reference agencies, or would it hurt to just apply now, tell the lender that there is now no c/card debt (bar a few hundred quid), which I could obviously prove when the next round of statements are sent out. How much impact does the reference agencies own credit score have on a mortgage application?
