  • Hey there,

Have you ever considered doing voluntary work? This could even lead to paid work in the future? You could always ask at the local community centre etc etc? I know I'd go stir crazy if I were home alone each and every day, but I think helping others would be a lovely thing to do!
(I'm a great believer in 'what goes around comes around too!)
    Best of luck

What about starting some sewing / cooking / cake decorating classes at your local college?
It's a great way to meet people and to pass the time. I did some cake making ones a while back and they weren't expensive. You're also likely to meet people with similar schedules to you so you might be able to get together with them on other days.

I find that I can get very down if I stay in all day watching TV .... what about going out for a jog / walk?
  • thanks for all the feedback ladies and gentlemen, i saw somebody mentioned try the other forums i just find that you wedding lot are the least judgemental and understanding and just so many hugs that it makes you feel better so really thank you.

i think i shall ring our local volunteer centre and see if they have anything.

i have always worked in offices doing reception work but i would love to work with children always have done but im not tidyed enough to do childminding and my two bed flat wouldn't be suitable. i'm always being told to be a childrens presenter but come on lets get real that wont happen! and although i trained as a childrens rep at college having a child isn't really a good option when that job is rather intense, i would love to become a childrens youth worker or something on that lines but its a lot of training at college and something i can afford at the moment and something i am rather insecure about.

i never thought about other courses i shall have a lot into them but again its the money that is the issue are they day courses or week courses?

    thank you again all x

Same here hun. I've been out of work just over 5 months now and I'm sick of it - I never imagined it would be so difficult to get ANYTHING! I apply on average for 1 job per day (some websites don't update often enough for more than that) and even though I'm prepared to take up to a £6k pa drop in salary for further travel & more hours I can't get anything - I'm applying for jobs over an hour away from home but at £5.80/£6 an hour I won't be gaining much.
I'd like to say the wedding is the only thing that's keeping me going, but to be honest we can barely afford to keep our house so I may end up starting married life 300 miles from my husband (he works in Edinburgh Mon - Fri so a lonely quiet house here too) and back living with my parents.
I cry regularly (night & day) but having suffered from depression before, refuse to go back to that place. I'm barely sleeping at the moment racking my brains how to pay for everything though both my parents & OH's dad are contributing to the big day.
I couldn't even get on the one college course I wanted to do (for my career) as they cancelled it due to lack of interest (out of the 6 colleges close to me!). The only thing that keeps me going is my hour or so of exercise every day in order to lose weight for my day.
I can't even get into the kitchen to enjoy batch cooking or anything as a) I can't afford to go to the supermarket and b) I'm on a diet so couldn't eat any baking anyway!

Anyway, that was all to say you're not alone and I really do understand where you're coming from.

If you want to talk, pm me.
  • thank you skint_catt for you reply it really means a lot.

just had a lot at all the part time courses near me wouldn't mind doing floristry but am awful with saying the names of flowers and i have a rather bad memory to the point i cant tell you what i did last monday unless i really really think hard, i cant tell you what i ate for dinner on saturday. it really is that bad,, so i would end up having to take a dictaphone with me and recording everything that was said so i can go over and over it all day.

see that is another issue not being able to remember basic things like that how am i going to be able to do much at college where it involes remembering things?

big hugs to all that feel as crap as me x

    Hi,
I've recently gone back to being a student after working full time for a few years. My memory is definitely not what it used to be but I take lots of notes, photos etc and it really does help. I think people who can just remember things they were told are very rare indeed. Most people need some sort of aides to help them. You shouldn't worry about it. Besides, it depends on the type of course you're doing but if it's a part time one which doesn't lead to a qualification, the atmosphere will be more relaxed. Even if you are aiming to get a qualification out of it, you'll find that there are other people in the same boat as you who are out of practice when it comes to learning.

When I did my cake course many of the women there were much older than me and were trying to find a new hobby / skill to take up time now that their children were grown up.

Could you maybe try one of the very short courses they do as a taster? Mine was only 3 classes (6 hrs each) long.

Best of luck with everything and hope you feel better.

Just to mention, you could perhaps think about being a teaching assistant (even maybe in your child's school if an opening comes up!) - they mainly work school hours only and training you need can be done on the job so to speak - have a look on your local county council website.... in the meantime you could be a parent helper at the school your child goes to (listen to the kids read, help teacher etc) cos then you would be considered more if an opening comes up there.... OR if you fancied it, most day nurseries hire unqualified nursery nurses and then pay for them/part pay for them to train on the job and you would then get "day release" to go to college and do the work which means you would qualify..... Just some thoughts.

Maybe contact http://nextstep.direct.gov.uk/ these guys - they are better than the job centre as they aren't always pushing you to do ANYTHING to get you off benefits lol.....they there to help..... no pressure etc, they are the over 20's version of Connexions.

Just found this nifty little tool - http://ufi.axiainteractive.net/learndirectAdviceVersion/index.htm its really good!"!!!
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

FDF, how about childrens nurse?? You get a bursay to train and tution fees paid http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Default.aspx?Id=89
I am a nurse and came to it later than most in life, quailifing at 30. If you are good with children then this would be an idea, NHS are crying out for good childrens nurses!
