Can I claim Tax back?

Options
Hi,

My girlfriend worked from June to December at one company and this was her first employment.

She has just received her P45 and is currently still unemployed.

On Part 2 of the form it says...

"Not working and not claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you have paid tax and wish to claim a refund ask for form P50 Claiming tax back when you have stopped working from any HMRCoffice or Enquiry Centre."

Her total pay to date was £8225.15 and Total Tax to date was £565.00

Does she need to claim any tax back and can I find out if she has paid to much?

Thanks

assuming her tax code was 647L she has overpaid by approximately £215

    is she not claiming JSA?

it is highly unlikely she can claim her tax back until the end of the tax year (5th April)

Dont think you would be able to claim it back until after the tax year.
She may start work again before April so the tax office cant work out a refund
till they know how much she has paid upto then.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Thanks to both of you for the help.

    No she isn't claiming JSA.

Yeah if she starts another job it would all change again.

Will we have to submit the forms to do this after April? I can't imagine them sending us a letter saying they owe her money!

Write to HMRC with the P45 after April 5th. The P50 is for claiming tax back before the end of the tax year so wont be applicable.

If she gets a new job before the new tax year then it may get refunded through her wages, if not you would still need to write with the P60.

If she's def not going to work again before April then submit the P50 but be certain she wont work as its a nightmare if she gets a refund then a job.

I sent the P50 off about 5 weeks ago. When should she received the tax she is due or a letter?

HMRC haven't been processing PAYE refunds for several months - owing to problems / software deficiencies with their new PAYE system.

But are due to start 'imminently' ........ although their website, as usual, is a bit devoid of information. P50 should read P45 (see post #5) ? If you sent a P50 in for the closed year .... they may be responding for the P45 ....... but are up to 8 weeks behind with correspondence.

Not a lot going for them, I'm afraid!

    Hi, Thanks for the reply.

    I sent the P50 off along with the P45 parts 2 & 3.

Was this the right thing to do?

    Thanks

The P50 is probably a bit superfluous (as your g/f left in a previous tax year - to 5.4.10) ....... but the P45 should get the job done.

So - hopefully it's in the 'pending refund' queue. And not the 'pending reply' queue. Judging by an earlier post I saw today - it looks as though refunds from PAYE are just starting to flow.
