Employees with Physical Disabilities within Private Sector Employment

Hi All.

I am currently in the final term of my business degree. I am completing a module in Business Ethics.

I have refined my study to the ethics behind the employment of employees with Physical Disabilities within the Private Sector.

The question I would like you to answer is "Do you believe enough is being done to encourage employees with Physical Disabilities into the private sector workplace? or do you believe discrimination is still rife within the Private Sector?"

The more you post, the fairer my arguement for and against can be :)

Whether you are physically disabled yourself, know someone who is, or just generally have a useful point to put across I would like to hear from you in this thread.

By posting, you will be giving your permission for me to repeat your quote within a presentation to a small validation group (8-10 students and 1 lecturer) from my university, however, no names, user names or personal details will be divulged and all participants will be privy to the final presentation and handouts (via. email).

Thankyou for anything you can add to this discussion. Your opinion REALLY does count :)

You might be better adding this to the Disabilites and Dosh Board, where many posters actually are disbled.

I have a disability but it is a hidden one in the way that I look completely fine but suffer from Hypermobility Syndrome and Fibromyalga. When I was looking for work, I found as soon as I mentioned it then most employers decided I wasnt fit and able to work for them despite me not having a sick day off work for over 3 years.

    yes, permission from mods please.

and seriously, THIS is your research methodology? can you imagine the bias you are getting in your results? If I were your supervisor we would be having Serious Words and sending you back to research 101. It's a totally subjective question. At least go design a survey with a decent set of questions and whack it on survey monkey, then ask for permission to post the link, and for petes sake take some population background stats.

  • I have contacted the Mods and I expect a response shortly.

I am purely asking for peoples opinions, experiences, ideas etc. to give me an idea of what peoples perceptions of the current employment market are.

I am sorry if I have offended anyone by asking the question.

Thankyou for replying to my thread

Your question is biased - you will fail your module straight off with that question.

when you say "your opinions really count", for what? only for getting an essay mark as far as I can see

Given no demographic data you would be as well - and quicker - asking random men in the pub. Which frankly I would go and do now instead of messing about on here.

AFAIK you are just wasting people's time on here when they could be helping people with real problems, not students with a lazy attitude to reseach that has very little to do with money saving.

And you aren't offending me You are annoying me cos my taxes contribute to your education and you're not doing it right!

Now, go pick a board with disabled people as their focus, with people with a more focussed interest, work out some PROPER questions, and go ask them. MS society has an active board, so do many other conditions.

I think your being overly harsh on the guy Emmzi. People make mistakes but don't need to have their head bitten of for it.

OP a more reasonable question for your study would be - how effective are current policies and practices at allowing disabled people equal access to the workforce within the private sector?

your question is a leading (and misleading)! one. for example, i could answer "yes, i think enough is being done". but what does that mean? does that mean i think that disabled people are adequately represented in the workplace. or does it mean i'm not bothered about disabled people being represented in the workplace and therefore i don't care that currrent provision is inadequate?

but to help you out....in my area of (private sector) work, my experience varies quite a bit between companies. this is often explained by the attitudes of higher management. for example, in one of the large production companies when we are looking for filming locations to which members of the public will be invited we are told to make sure they are accessible and to make this clear on any recruitment for contributors to the show. at other companies this is not a consideration at all. some companies actively employ disabled people and have adapted offices etc to suit. at others there is no such effort.

tbh i'm not sure of the details of legislation so i'm not sure whether some companies flout legislation or whether it is the legislation that is inadequate.

i think there should be more publicity and education in the general population of what rights disabled people have and what workplaces should offer as this might shame some of the offenders to do more.

I interpret it as the OP wants some opinions from us; s/he will then read these quotes to the focus group, who will then discuss/debate. Qualitative, not quantiative, is my opinion.

I think that enough is being done to encourage people with disabilities into the PS workplace. On the other hand, I feel employers are scared to employ disabled people, for the fear of doing something wrong and getting sued. Debate...
