Swimming with glasses/prescription goggles

Saw a guy swimming with glasses the other day, he simply had glasses on and a band around the back of his head which fastened to the glasses. Anyone else done this?

Also, does anyone know a cheap place for prescription goggles?

Or does anyone swim with contacts? Do you wear goggles as well?

thanks

Wife has an old pair of glasses with the arms removed fixed in her facemask with blue tack.

I swim in contacts + goggles. There is a nasty infection which you can pick up if you swim in contacts alone which can cause permanent sight loss. Prescription goggles are the safest option but I don't swim often enough to make them worthwhile.
  • I used to swim wearing my contacts and a really good pair of goggles! The brand I liked were called Zoggs, no idea if they are still around.

I've also gone in with no glasses or contacts, which is a bit scary at first because I can't even make out other people's faces at close range, which perhaps made me seem a bit odd, but swimmming was so solitary I didn't mind. Had to feel my way back to the lockers though (near enough anyway).
  • I can highly recommend the prescription goggles from Butterflies Healthcare. (Google them). The goggles are a bit bigger than normal goggles but they're amazing - it is fantastic to be able to see your way around swimming baths after years of not being able to!

    Seems like four options

    1) glasses with band to hold them on - however imagine they don't clear that easily

    2) Contacts alone - might wash out and might pick up infection, chlorine get behind lens and cause red eye

    3) Contacts and goggles - may as well get prescription goggles for around £20 as negates any risk of infection

    4) Prescription goggles - found for around £20 online, so think might do this. Only thing is I would have to have them on all the time, which is even worse than glasses!
  • I got prescription goggles from Boots last August. They have transformed my swimming! It's truly amazing to be able to see properly in the pool and they fit perfectly. They cost me £40 and to be honest it felt worthwhile doing it this way to be sure that they were right for my prescription. I'm swimming a lot more partly because i feel a lot more confident in the pool. And because I'm able to properly put my head under the water etc my technique is getting better too.

Prob not worth it if you don't swim often, but I'm going three times a week or sometimes even more and it's been worth every penny!

Some people swim with their glasses (plastic lenses) attached to a ski band - perfectly safe and allowed in most pools - please check with your local staff.

Prescription goggles are fabulous and, if you go swimming a lot, well worth the cost.

Those people I have seen wearing glasses in the pool mostly have severe eyesight problems and are unable to wear contacts. Not seeing in the pool and changing rooms can be really scary and off putting.

I always swim blind. Its amazing what it does for your confidence because you cant see if people are looking at you or not!

Conversely though it is amazing quite how much you can see when you have prescription goggles :) I'd always thought once you were in the water you were 'covered up'. Not so!! I have a swimsuit that I describe as my pamela anderson because as I swim in it I gradually become uncovered - never used to bother me that much because no one could see it.....I don't wear that any more!

You've started every man's mind wandering though....;)
