PCOS and Clomid

Hi everyone
I'm writing this on behalf of my best friend, who is currently undergoing the above fertility treatment. I know this isn't anything to do with money saving, and I'm not asking for medical advice. I've seen lots of boards regarding TTC, but thought my post might get lost, so decided to write a new thread. If anyone has been through this sort of thing, I would really love to hear it!
Friend had irregular periods from when they started until she went on the pill aged 16. She was on the pill for 9 years, until she got married then they decided to TTC. She came off the pill, and straight away didn't have a period. They got excited, done a test and it was negative.
For the next 15 months, she didn't have a period or get pregnant. Started to get advice from GP, who sent her for an internal scan and said she has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). He told her to do a 6 month course of clomid, plus metformin and provera and see how it goes. Over the 4 months, her follicles had grown and matured in size by a small amount, so the clomid was working. Then she had a period all by herself, which was really good considering this had never happened before, then she was scanned and told to not take the clomid for a month, so she didn't. She's just gone for her 5th internal which showed that her follicles have got smaller, because she didn't take the clomid....
I thought if when you have a period, you ovulate but her doctor is saying this isn't always the case?
She's very confused, and upset by it all, she thought they were getting somewhere!
She's been told to wait and see if she comes on her period naturally again, but this is her 6th and last month and she's feeling a bit down, which is understandable. Not having been through this myself, I try to offer advice and guidence, but it's not helping.
Has anyone been in, or know someone who has been in that situation?
Thanks in advance X
