Halifax, 3 months before fixed rate end to find new deal?

Hi all, our fixed rate deal with Halifax is coming to an end in March and I thought I'd heard that Halifax gave you the 3 months prior to the end date to potentially enter into a new deal without penalties, I rang them and they confirmed that this was so and would we like to make an appointment to see an advisor, so we did.
But when I got to a branch, the advisor told me that I needed to wait until the fixed rate end day before we could do anything and that many people have the same misconception, this rendered the whole meeting all but pointless apart from it giving her an opportunity to try to sell us some expensive Halifax insurance. Does anyone know what the truth is?, do we definitely have to wait until after the fixed term period or was she pulling a fast one?
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Rubbish!
Is your current Halifax mortgage deal coming to an end?

Never been true any time I've fixed again, and the last time I did so was last April. If you're definitely staying with Halifax, I'd just look at their website and do it over the phone - I've always found customer services much more helpful than the branch advisers who have told me various things over the years which have since proved to be untrue.0
