I was admiring a friends Shaker style kitchen and found out her husband had made it and used spray paint as it doesn't chip easily. Her kitchen was 10 years old and it looked like new, the paint was like a plastic coating, not like paint at all.

that's a good shout -I was on holiday in the States recently and was watching Merge (home improvement show) and they took an old table top, fashioned funky new legs from an old headboard and then took it to a guy who spray painted cars for a business and had him paint and lacquer it. Think he charged about $200 so not sure what the charge would be here but it was a really professional job as he had all the gear and that was what he did for a living (albeit not normally tables!)
