in Cutting tax
I'm wondering if someone can help me. I've just finished filing my tax return online but haven't submitted it just yet. I work largely full-time with some self employed work on the side. The vast majority of my tax is paid through my full-time employment. My income from self employment amounts to a tiny, tiny fraction of my main employment.
In my 2007/8 tax return I paid a contribution towards my self employment in the 2008/9 year based, I presume, on my earnings for the 2007/8. It seems reasonable to assume that they anticipate your tax in the following year will be at least similar to the previous year, if not more. I paid an initial contribution for the 2008/9 year with my tax payment when I submitted my 2007/8 return (January 2009) and then again in July 2009.
My earnings from self employment in the 2008/9 are nowhere near what they were in the 2007/8 year and I believe I should be due a repayment of the tax I paid up front for the 2008/9 year. This doesn't appear to have been factored into my online tax calculation on the Revenue and Customs site.
Is there somewhere on my tax return where I should list the contributions I've already made for self employment in the 2008/9 year or can I trust the Revenue to automatically issue me with a repayment within the next month or so?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

The tax payments on your account are entirely separate to yoour self assessment and tax calculation. The payment on account you have already made will be taken into account when deciding what your balancing payment is (if any).£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

The payments on account are not considered when you submit your tax return online. All you will initially get is the calculation of the total liability for the 08/09 year.
Leave it 24 hours then go back in and view your account and it will show how much of a refund you will be due based on your lower self-employed profit and the payments you have already made.
Don't forget to put your bank account details on the return before you submit it so that they can refund as soon as possible. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
