What is average

As in previous posts, for the last 3.5 years I have been trying to get somebody to own up to being my electricity supplier. Well at last E.ON have stepped up to the mark and moving forward have agreed to actually start billing me.
So it would have been nice if I didn't still have to pay but I can't really complain after they have just written off the best part of £3000 :T
So now I have to pay for this stuff I am doing the usual price checking and so on but when I look at what my consumption looks like, compared to what I am seeing on here, it seems high.
My house is a new build property with gas heating and water and every single light bulb in the property is low energy (cost me a fortune). We tend to turn off everything at night and all the appliances are AAA rates.
But it is looking like my annual electricity consumption is around 8000 KWH which is sounding high.
So does this feel high? What would be considered average consumption?
My gas on the other hand seems to be below average compared to others so I something seems odd.
Any thoughts?

a 'Unit' measured on your meter could be 11kWh or 30kWh

Agreed, your elec figure seems high. 14800kWh gas and 8000 elec. In my 3 bed detatched we use 24000 gas and 4000 elec with computers on 24/7 etc. Your gas seems ok if you are energy efficient. How do you heat water in summer ?0

Our hot water tank is one of these super efficient ones so I have the hot water on (gas) for about an hour in the morning (between 5am and 6am) which is enough to heat the full tank. I am able to take a shower in the morning and still run a full bath in the evening for the little one without having to have the hot water on again. This is the same all year round.
We do not use electricity EVER to heat the water.
So you see my dilemma. We try to be efficient and that really shows on the gas usage but the electricity seems to be way out for our life style.
But we do have the usual big flat screen TVs, computers etc so I am going to go and buy an energy monitor and go room by room to work out where it is going. I think this is the only real way.

Take meter readings daily and see if there are any high / low days and try to assosciate that with what you are doing. Switch everything in the house off and see if the meter still clocks up, try it at different times of the day. Have you got an immersion heater in the water tank and are you sure it is not switched on by a hidden timer, an hour of gas seems very quick to heat a tank of water enough to keep it hot all day. My 4000 usage includes heating the water for a few summer months.0
