2 coding notices, same date, 2 different codes
I have 2 jobs, first code 899l :T, second job code D0:(
First code includes my expenses, and is correct. 2nd code D0 means 40% on all earnings in 2nd job.By my reckoning only part of my second income should be 40%. Very grateful if anyone can help with these questions?
1 Can this D0 code be changed to reflect this?
2 Given that my expenses are included in the 899l code, do I still have to submit the forms to claim them?
3 When is year 08/09 being calculated as I think I have underpaid
3 Finally, when the new system goes 'live', which tax year will it start with? 08/09 or earlier? Can't stand the thought of going back over closed years and haven't kept paperwork for them aaargh as HMRC told me they were closed and that was it.
Many thanks

1 If you think the code on your second job is incorrect contact HMRC. Preferably after 31st January as the lines are very busy with last minute self-assessing taxpayers.
2 You have to keep HMRC informed of your expenses as they won't know if they have gone up or down without you telling them.
3 08/09 will be calculated when all your P14's have been entered to your record. However if HMRC don't have your actual expense details for that year then the calculation will be wrong.
4 By new system what do you mean? If it's PAYE then it already has gone live. The new computer system was launched last June and the data from the old system migrated over to the new one. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi and many thanks for your reply. What I meant is in terms of the new system that went live in June. Am I correct it will see both of my jobs and will issue a new tax code based on those?Which tax years does it look at? As in will it start for 08/09 or 09/10? Or does it go back further? The reason I ask is that my tax years up to 07/08 are finally sorted as I had underpaid and have now paid back. It took ages to get sorted and I can't face going through those years again lol. Does this make sense?! Thank you again0

2008/09 will be dealt with at some time over the next couple of years. Why do you think your liability will need to be reviewed for previous years when these years have already been cleared?£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

The new system will start with 08/09 and if the previous years have already been reconciled it will also have migrated over from the old COP system so no need to worry there.
The new system has been designed so that it shows all your employments and tax codes will be issued based on the number of employments HMRC are aware of.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks very much for your help Pam17 & fengirl. Have waited a long time for this new system! I'm PAYE but years of different tax codes as 2 jobs = 2 different tax offices = 2 wrong codes = me on phone = lots of form filling = nightmare. Has been stressful as different code almost every 2 months lol. But everyone at HMRC has been very nice I have to say. I am even so good I write to HMRC to let them know my projected income every year so we can get it right.
All sorted now and up to date to 08/09, didn't know if the new system would go back years and years, just the thought of having to do it all again for years before 08/0-9 ...... aaargh. I have CSE grade 3 maths! Relieved I haven't got to and I won't even start about NI contributions....
anyway, thanks again, very much appreciated0 -

Can I be curious, as this thread appears to be drawing to a close (apologies to the OP if not) :-- Does the 'new PAYE' system have a proper name? Or after 'COP' (Computerisation of PAYE) ... have HMRC run out of IT based ideas?;)
- Does the 'new PAYE' system also handle payment accounting? In other words does it also supersede the curiousily named 'BROCS' (Business Review of Collection Systems)

......... I'm getting nowhere. Grateful of the inside view.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
It started off officially as :-
MPPC - Modernising PAYE Processes for Customers,
now it seems to be known as
NPS - New PAYE System, there is another abbreviation but for the life of me I can't remember it.
Sooner or later it will be known as something else when someone thinks up a new abbreviation.
not sure about BROCS, minds you I'm still trying to remember what "troncs" stands forHe's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Excellent - thank you. I now have a reference point :-
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/agents/news-payeservice.htm
(and a quick look suggests it doesn't / nor is intended - to hold the accounting at employer level)
And to return the favour :-I'm still trying to remember what "troncs" stands for
.... it doesn't (ie no acronym) It's from the French ' tronc de pauvres' ....... literal meaning of 'poor box' !!If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
