Bows and things

I am going to a graduation ball on Thur night and being OS, I am wearing a dress that I bought a while ago. I want to make the dress a little different and match it to the shoes I am planning to wear by adding a thick ribbon around my waist that will tie at the back of the dress. I was just wondering if I starch the ribbon will that help the bows stand up or will it mark the fabric? I think it will most probably be a satin ribbon. Thanks for any ideas or help. x
