  • They are very bad they say the bad things youve done and you have to sit in the defending chair and make your defense claims then it gets sent to office for a vote

    ^^^^ lol

An appraisal is a time to have a chat about setting objectives for the next year and talk about last years objectives and achievements. It is also a time to speak about training needs and any other issues you need.

Nothing in an appraisal should come as a suprise as feedback should be given constantly on the job whether it be good or bad.

I am normally given paperwork to help prepare for the appraisal, a few weeks before. Gives you a chance to write down your acheivements, training desires, areas where you feel you need help, etc.

AGREE your targets for next year - dont be bullied into anything you feel is unrealistic. Your payrise could depend on them!

LMAO at 1st reply. Don't worry. An appraisal is they find the areas you're good in, and the ones you could do better in, but it's not nasty, it's constructive (e.g. would you like a hand being shown the system as you seem a little confused. etc)

  • Appraisal is a two-way thing, and is intended to improve the overall performance of the worker within the organisation, it is not intended as a dressing down, but a way for you and your manager to discuss how you are doing, how you can improve, and how the manager can help you to achieve this improvement, for instance by extra training in areas which you are unsure of.

The manager will point out things where he feels you could do better and discuss with you what can be done. It's not a telling off session.

It is also a time for you to have your say on how you think you are doing, what your aims are and to point out anything which may be hindering your progress and that they can help to resolve. Even if the manager is doing things which get in the way of your improvement, or a particular rule needs adjusting to fit a situation, its your chance to say how things could be made better.

There are no chains or whips, I promise!

Thankyou all for your answers I also have a form attached to my appraisal about what evidence i should put forward for my end of year review ? Its says in brackets did you achieve your objectives well thats a no as this is my first appraisal, also which technical competencies have you signed off ? Would this be my manufacturing training logs which i have to complete before i go go into the isolator room and manufactor aseptic drugs etc for patients ? I havent completed all thou as theres so many ? Also on the form it says is there a project you r proud off ? What would this be ? Could it be that our unit is moving to a new build in the hospital ground which has been built for us could this be the project ? Then the last part is copies odd logs etc which my manager has already got in my working manual as she has to sign me on once learned how to manufactor aseptic drugs etc .

  • I would put something like 'I feel I have achieved some of my objectives, although there is still more to achieve'. In your first year you have no previous experience to judge your progress by, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Before your appraisal you should receive your Managers version which may help you when you write yours.

It's not an interview, you're not being interrogated, they're designed so you and your Manager can have a chat about how things are going, anything you wish to improve on etc... etc... if there's something on the form that you think doesn't apply to you or your job, just say so, it may be that HR generate the same form regardless of what job you're in.
