Hi ya,just want to offer some support,my son was allergic to cow's milk and his throat/face would swell up like a balloon,it was very frightening. Can't really remember much about what he ate other than meat, fruit and vegetables.I do however remember things he couldn't eat skips being something that caused no end of problems as friends would feed them to their kids and drop them on the floor,my son would pick them up and doing what babies do,put them in his mouth,I turn around, head like a football, out comes the epi-pen and ambulance called.I found other peoples attitude the major problem, they just don't understand that he/she CAN'T eat it.
One word of warning,my son's teeth are now damaged as a result of the soya milk he had as a baby, dentist said they will need veneers when he is older, apparently, babies should take a calcium supplement when taking soya, unfortunately,we were not told this.

    Hi all

my son has been to see the paediatrician today, and he may have an intolerance to cows milk- we have to do a 2week trial to rule it out/diagnose it.

so, i have my soya baby formula on order at the chemist, and have been to morrisons this afternoon. they didnt have a great range of soya products, but i managed to get: milk, margerine, one variety of yoghurt, and some dairy free ginger biscuits.. (DS LOVES ginger biscuits :p)

however, he eats a lot of cheesy/dairy type food, and now i'm a bit stumped as to what to feed him......

    any help would be appriciated.

    many thanks

Hiya, My baby has cow's milk protein intolerance and has been on Nutramigen since being 9 weeks old. This is a hypoallergenic milk where the proteins have been extensively broken down - might be worth a try?

All we've done is substitute normal milk with the nutramigen for things like custard and similar. It is also possible to buy dairy and milk free products - boots is good, their rusks don't contain milk. I've also found that Cow and Gate are the best for a good range of milk free jars. I tend to offer the foods that i make for the rest of the family just without the milk content...

    Good evening all,

My youngest son is also intolerent to cow's milk protein as well as lactose, wheat, gluten and soya. He is now 17 months old and continues on Nutramigen milk and carobel (luckily for us it is prescription). I have also found that Sainsbury's is by far the best for shopping for resticted diets.

I try to bulk a lot of his meals out with rice and suitable pasta. I found before that he was eating that much fruit and veg that this created problems of it's own. His stomach was continually crampy and his nappies were even more vile than they are now!!!

  • hi all, my daughter (19 months old) has cows milk allergy , i tried goat sheeps milk cheese etc, but she had the same reaction to that as she did to cows milk (red blisters where it's been in contact with the skin)! So i use rice milk, or soya milk she prefers rice milk (which you can get with added calcium) which is available in most supermarkets normally with the longlife milk, not in the fridges.I use pure spread instead of marg/butter, which comes in sunflower or soya. You can get alpro yogurts both normal with added calcium and longlife again with calcium, ready made custard, single cream all from alpro, a ice cream called Swedish Glace made from soya bean (it's very yummy), i get that from booths or my local health shop. Cheesley do great sort of cheeses (ones you can melt for cooking) you can get a kinda cheese spread called Tofutti, my daugther loves the garlic and herb.
I have to say when i found out about my daughters allergy i did panic, and didn't think i would be able to manage, but to be honest i just changed the way the whole family eats, she doesn't miss out on anything i make biscuits, cakes etc for when we go to toddler groups, so when they sit down for juice & biscuits she has something and she doesn't know they are any different.
I can give you recepes if you like, but all i tend to do is if it says butter, (use pure) , if it says milk use (rice/soya milk). It saves making different meals for everyone, and i'm all for a easy life!!!!!!
One piece of advice i would give you is to try and find a good independent health shop, mine is fantastic and i can get most of the things i need from there.:D

Hi been reading this tread with interest.
My son who is now 12 years old, has been taking part in a study at southampton general hospitals allergy clinic,
    called children of the 90's.
Proffesor warner (the uks leading allergy expert) is his specialist.
we were told not to give him Rice milk, cos it has no nurtrition compared to milks. Also not to give Goat or sheep milk, cos it is the same thing, it has protiens which they are allergic too.
If you give soya milk with cereal, make sure you give them some pure orange juice at the same time, cos it helps absorb the calcium.
    Kindness costs nothing :)

I've had this discussion so many times - I'm no expert but all I know is that DH and DD2 get ill if they have cow's milk but seem to tolerate goat's and sheep milk fine. I know it contains lactose too, but I wonder if it perhaps less intensively farmed?

anyhoo...just wanted to mention that it's worth looking out for sheep milk products eg manchego cheese (it's a spanish hard cheese, great substitute for cheddar - Tesco sell it as part of their finest continental cheese range)

also proper greek yoghurt is made with sheep milk (but greek "style" will be made with cows)

As others have said, once you've spent a few weeks reading labels etc you'll find there's a range of products that you can use, and it wont seem so daunting. It's just hard work when you're still finding out.

goat/sheep milk is actually higher in calcium than cows milk. also don't forget that lots of other food contains calcium, for example parsley, and brocolli!
    weaving through the chaos...
