Wife has a large 4x4 for horses (3.2l petrol) wondering if anyone has any advice as I am looking into an LPG conversion, the initial quotes are coming in @ £2000 mark with a possible saving of £1500 a year. Having said that however it is a 1996 reg'd car, is it worth it?

i think you have to look at how long you intend on keeping the car if u keep it 4 years to come then yeh prob is! if you think you will be upgrading why not look at sellin your current car and buying an already lpg conveted one. also ask the question do i need a 4x4 as a smaller car will be cheaper to run. hope this helpsI Don't like you!0

On what mileage do you calculate a £1,500 saving. i.e Current mpg, Predicted mpg and annual mileage?0 -
It should be calculated based on Predicted Annual Mileage.
These guys might be slighly cheaper if you live near birmingham

Although i think it might be cheaper to sell the car and buy a diesel 4x4 of simler year?

Just had my 1998 3.0 Litre Renault Espace auto converted for £1600 in North Herts. / South Cambs. System is good (Multipoint injection, Bigas / Zavoli). MPG down a little, but still half the running cost of petrol. PM me if you want more info.

Two LPG converstions here - 3.0 litre P reg Omega estate and 1.8 litre N reg BMW touring - both cost around £1500 - and both probably paid for themselves in a year. Added to this, most of the mileage I do in the BMW is business mileage, which the IR allow me 40p per mile, running on LPG is a lot cheaper, so I'm making a wee profit from the tax man - always a good thing
Very little if any loss of performance - the BMW does around 300 miles per fill costing around £23, and the Omega (which has a smaller tank, both are donut tanks which fit in the spare wheel well) does around 150 miles to the £20. Running on petrol costs £60 to fill and does around 260 miles....Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
My husband bought an LPG converted van (1.8L) for his business to replace his Vauxhall Corsa (1.2L). Corsa on petrol cost 14p/mile. Van on LPG (which also uses some petrol when it starts up) has cost 10p/mile so far. As there were problems when we first got it, it was initially run on petrol only so this figure is 30% petrol and 70% LPG. It is therefore definitely cheaper for us but we didn't pay for conversion (actually got it cheaper because of conversion).
You'd need to get quotes for exactly how much fuel consumption would be and think about how long you would intend to keep it so you can compare the savings with the cost. You should also make sure you get a certificate of compliance when you have it converted otherwise you will have difficulties getting insurance. I'd recommend speaking to the insurance before you have it converted.0 -
Get a diesel 4x4, you'll nearly half your fuel use and you'll have a better towing vehicle - far more torque just what you want for towing. And you could even get it converted to run on veg oil. LPG is still a fossil fuel something most people forget when they are told it is supposedly 'green'.0

I think LPG is a non runner long term as bio ethanol is gaining massive support abroad and bio diesel is even better
http://www.alternativesouls.com/oil/
has a great artical on it
so a basic diesel car can be converted for £40
Gnever take advice from broke or unsuccessful people

biodiesel? thats so last year
this is where the future lies

makes all fossil fuels look like the fossils they are0 -
Hmmm... after reading through the website above something didn't sound right (probably all those exclamation marks) so I did a search....
found:

.......scroll down to the bottom of each page.
I really couldn't see how this would ever work. You can't MAKE energy, any energy derived from this gas would be lost in producing it via greater stress on the engine = greater fuel consumption, never mind loss through heat production.0
