My 12yr old has always loved cooking/baking....she even makes a proper pizza base with yeast etc(from a kids baking book i bought her at christmas),she makes delicious chocolate muffins and her favourite main meal is stuffed chicken breasts..very simple, slice the breasts, stuff with cream cheese wrap in bacon and bake in the Remoska/oven.
Her 17yr old sister has also been baking/cooking for years and now also cooks twice a week during Hospitality lessons at school(studying Highers)she brought home a lovely vegetarian lasagne during the week, unfortunately she isnt so keen now to cook a family meal,I think she see's it as a chore-novelty has worn off;)

What an ace idea! My eldest is nearly 7 and loves baking with me so this would just be an extension of that...

DS is only 20 months but still has a go at putting his toppings on his pizza :D

There are some very cheap student cook books around, which is a dumb student can cope with, then I am sure a smarter young teenager would! They are looking at economy too.

Cooking and budgeting a great skills to teach your children, with the added bonus that they and you get something nice to eat at the end of it!

My kids cook a lot, if dd3 is in charge it'll generally be something simple like baked potatoes or pizza, but then she's only 8! The other 3 can all cook well, dd2 and ds love cooking, dd2 isn't so keen but still takes her turn, she prefers things that go in the moski or slow cooker or pasta bake type things, she isn't keen on using the hob, but she still churns out good food!

All of my kids take turns doing the meal plans too, they all asked to do this I didn't make them, honest! They know to look in the fridge and cupboards to see what needs using up, they understand that if we are having a roast then the meat will need to be used in alternative ways such as pies/curries/stir fries, and they know to look in the freezer for whoopsies and other items. From the meal plan they can all produce a shopping list for the main meals, now all I need is for ds to pass his driving test next December and then they can shop too!

All these things they have done quite happily, with just a bit of encouragement from me and each other, and it is nice to know that they will be able to feed themselves when they do leave home, meanwhile it's nice not to have to do it all myself!

ps to whoever mentioned the washing machine, my lot can all use that too, the girls are hopeless at getting their stuff into the wash basket on time, so they often have to bung on a load, ds prefers doing his own stuff, as then he only ends up drying and folding his stuff and not having to sort anyone elses!

My children all love cooking. Even if it is just rolling out cookie dough or pastry. my lil boy of 21 m loves rolling out pastry, pizza bases. My daughter loves making a whole recipe start to finish. she is interested in baking anything and everything. My son 4, only likes doing things such as rice crispy cakes, play dough etc. but i don't mind how much or how little. as they are wonderful basic skills they can build on for later on in life. we prob do some sort of baking/cooking once a week.
