What nzmegs says about needing more time to answer questions is good, if they are aware that your hesitation in answering has a good reason behind it- because you are trying to remain calm and in control, and not because you can't think of an answer- they will hopefully be more understanding. It will also take the pressure off you to be hasty in answering, and maybe this will help to reduce your stammering itself?

Could someone help me to word this a little better? My numeracy is a bit better than my literacy! While not a disability, I would like to make the interviewers aware of my stammer. My 3 years of work in retail and customer care should testify that it does not get in the way of my ability to do my job, but I would just appreciate if the interviewers could be patient in the event that I do stammer, and not write it off as either extreme nervousness, or not knowing what to say. I would be happy to answer any questions you have in relation to it.

I have a stammer (I'm 47 yo). However much I try and deny its impact on my life I'm pretty sure that is has been detrimental. There are many jobs that I would have fancied a go at but always shied away. As it happens I don't stammer as much now as I used too. But still certain scenarios fill me with dread. Interviews and presentations don't bother me at all, weird!
A lot will depend on how severe your stammer is and what are your trigger points. Only you and close family/friends will know what they are. Assuming that you are successful in getting an interview then imho that is the time and place to mention that you have a stammer. The DDA doesn't cater for us that have a stammer so don't use that.
    Lastly be positive!

I think nzmegs advice on what to say is really good.
Knowing that they are aware of your problem may help you focus on your answer instead of the stutter, as they will expect you to take a bit more time to prepare.

I would personally feel sympathetic to people who face additional obstacles in their life, and I think if you give people a chance when others turned them down they will probably be more loyal.
I may be wrong of course (and obviously the ability to do the job is the priority, business is business!).

    GOOD LUCK!

Why wouldn't the DDA cover people with a speech impairment ? It covers people with sight or hearing impairments.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I dont normally read this forum but I wanted to comment. I've known people both personally and professionaly who stammer. And I've found that the more you make people aware of your stammer, the worse it becomes.

    .

I agree, stress brings it out as well, worrying about the job will make it worse, if your think your going to stammer, you will, as you get so het up thinking, please dont let me stammer, so you need to try and be as calm as you can.
If you feel that it will help them to understand you better, or where your coming from then you could tell them.

I have a sister who stammers, and apparently not a lot of females stammer, its more of a boy thing, why I dont know, but I know every trait of her, I know when she has her good periods where she is so good you never think she had a stammer, she can go for days and weeks sometimes, and I know what those times are when she stammers so much I am crying for her.

Mind you, she seems better when she is face to face with someone, but on the phone her stammer can be really bad.

I know most of it is emotional stress, I know that for a fact, as she is not in a happy marriage, and she tends to stammer more, after a couple of days away from her partner she talks perfect.

I hope everything goes okay for you.:)
  • My stammer was really helped with speech therapy which lasted ten years, it was a rehabilation technique and I also learnt the stutter alphabet which every person with a stammer have a right to know and learn. i am nearly 40 now and I still cannot say my own name which in some cases can be the lowest point, when people mistake me for an idiot!
  • Forgot to update this. Have an interview on March 23rd. Now the fun begins!
