Hi,
I read on on a website (not MSE) which mentioned mystery shopping few months back (6 to be precise) and did few mystery shops. Till date I have not informed HMRC about this. I am not registered as Self Employed. How do I go about doing this and as it is more than 3 months are they going to fine me for this? I know it was very dumb of me. But instead of judging me, can someone answer this please
Not sure if this is relevant but I am on basic rate tax and work full time
Thankyou very much

I wouldn't worry too much about it, just register ASAP and write a brief explanation in the box that you didn't realise. I registered late and didn't get a fine. I personally don't think HMRC would issue a fine for people earning small amounts of money.
I'm almost sure I've read that the £100 fine doesn't apply unless you earn above a certain amount.
Edit: Here it is: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/bulletins/tb53-amendment.pdf
The £100 penalty doesn't apply if you earned less than £3955 pro rata. This is because the fine applies to people who should have paid Class 2 National Insurance and you don't have to pay this if you earn below the above amount.0 -
You need to ring the self employed helpline. The number will be on https://www.hmrc.gov.uk
They will decide if they will fine you or not. If you speak to someone they will explain what will happen. Here I go again on my own....0 -

Pound,
Thanks for replying
How will they know that I have earned less than £3955. or do you have to pay the penalty along with your tax return if they do decide to penalize me.
or will they check from the CF10 form (I won't be paying any class 2 NI)
Thanks0 -
It's probably best to ask HMRC that question.
You could write your expected earnings in the additional information box and HMRC may decide not to issue a penalty. According to the URL I posted if you do get a penalty the bill will include information on how to dispute it.0 -
Thankyou very much Pound :A
