My union has got involved as the organisation I work for prides itself on getting mums flexible hours etc. They seem to think that there will not be a problem so fingers crossed!

Can't really see what the union can do except ask for them to consider your request seriously. If they need you to do your job full time then they can refuse your request to part time hours...end of.

The union are taking it on the basis that

    a) there is someone wanting my fulltime shift, i want her part time shift
    b) the way the meeting was conducted was incorrectIt
    c) the organisation promotes being 'parent friendly' and accomodating.

It may be the end of it but I will fight every avenue.

sorry if I didn't see that there was someone else wanting your shift and you want hers, as long as they are capable of doing the job then I can't see the problem.

How did the do the meeting wrong, either way I doubt thats going to change the companies opinion.

As for being an accomidating company it does however mean they may not be able to do this all the time but if they do it the majority of the time then thats fine

I wish I could state who I worked for an you would see why I'm so annoyed but unfortunately I can't.

Apparently I should have been given the option of taking a witness (which I wasn't even though I asked my manager too come), and there not happy that I was told "it wasn't there problem I decided to reproduce"

I just detailed everything to the union and asked if I had a case. They said yes and the head union guy has took it on. Least if I still don't get my shift then I know I tried everything. That and they will lose 2 advisors due to not getting the shift swaps!

OP is there a length of time you have to remain at work after maternity leave so you don't have to pay any money back? I had to go back for a year...

28 days as far as I am aware. The maternity package they offer is really good.

Blimey! Seems odd for an organisation to be that amenable but togive you, what appears to be, the run around over shifts.

Perhaps the problem rests firmly with the individual who has 'reproduction' issues. Wonder if he/she says the same to his/her mum?

Hmm....well thats where a cynical thought has just popped up in my head - ie I am wondering whether "losing 2 advisors" might be precisely what they are after actually. Maybe they would like you both to resign and then they could re-fill those positions with "cheaper" people or perhaps not "re-fill them" at all - and save themselves some money.

But then - maybe thats just me being my usual cynical self about employers' intentions.... (my motto re employers is "never underestimate how crafty they can be").
