  • Wow! What a great forum and great advice from everyone - much appreciated indeed. I ate 4 slices of bacon and two eggs and half a tin of beans last night. Yum.

I think I am going to find this next week "fun" as far as trying to get far on a small budget.

I have decided to put off shopping until later on today now - just as I have enough in my cupboard to last till then. I think the prices for food at ALDI are great and I think I am going to visit there or LIDL later on today.

I am not the greatest cook - but I think living on a very small budget is great for two reasons: Firstly, it saves money of course! and secondly, it forces you to cook and make foods from scratch. I need this as I am a self-confessed very poor cook, and the only way to get better is through practice.

Again I am amazed at the brilliant responses that I have received so far - thank you all very much :T

    go for soup!
it will fill you and goes on for ages!

Definitely worth learning to make soup! I made a batch of leek and potato this week that has produced 5 big bowls, so enough for dinner not the tiny portions you get from tins. Total cost was around £2 (I work for M&S so just got their half price offers on leeks and potatoes) and bulked out with toast that is 5 decent meals for £3.
  • Regarding the soup: I LOVE soup but just don't have a clue (or a big pot) to make it. :(

Could you borrow a pot off someone?

You just need a saucepan or two. I am no great cook but soup is so easy, its basically sweating an onion and veg in some oil or butter, adding stock (water and stock cube), boiling till soft then blitzing if you have a blender or eat as is if you dont. I make a lovely bean soup that doesnt need a blender.
