It's possible to knit, weave and crochet using plastic carrier bags - maybe you could make wrapping? Old maps from a charity shop would be attractive too.

I love the idea of weave to use carrier bags that I always seem to end up with even though I try very hard not to - own bags and arms!

  • This year I sent Christmas postcards, using the front of the cards sent to me the previous year. I drew a dotted line down the middle, so the address bit was like a normal postcard, and wrote my message on the left. At the bottom I wrote something like 'no extra trees were cut down to make this recycled card!'. I sent about thirty and it didn't take too long. Haven't had feedback - maybe they all thing I'm a cheapskate. Birthday and other cards can be cut up the same way.
By the way, as long as you remove all the sticky tape, old paper gift wrap can be ironed before use.
  • For years I have used old cards to make gift tags. last year I collected baskets bought from carboots or charity shops or had things in and been given to me put each persons gifts bought in sales, carboots and charity shops in a basket wrapped with cellophane I bought from a flowershop that was closing down tied with ribbon also bought from same flowershop stuck on cut outs salvaged from nice wrapping paper too badly torn to save dabbed on bit of glue and sparkleys left over from grandchildren's craft days and hey presto a lovely expensive looking package that only cost coppers and a bit of time.
:TChrissieT love the Christmas postcards idea  pitty Ive already cut mine up but will keep it in mind for year after
  • Camenbert boxes! We love a Camenbert in our house and the wooden boxes they come in make great gift boxes.

My brother and sister-in-law once gave me a gold necklace in a tiny box which was wrapped in a £20 note - he said it took ages to find a box small enough as he couldn't afford to sellotape two pieces of 'wrapping paper' together. Sometimes I think he takes his Jewish background too far! :rotfl:

I remember when I was a little girl many many years ago. One of my grandmas used to knit rugs and mats with old nylon stockins. Plastic hadnt been invented then. Some she would dye first others she left their natural colour. She also made I call them tab rugs some folk call them clippy mats I have also heard them called hooker rugs. My job was to cut up the pieces of material to certain widths and size and then sort the colours so she could make patterns out of them. Then she showed me how to hook the piece under the hook and pull it through to the right side. Plastic carrier bags hadnt been invented then we used those brown carrier bags with string handles that used to cut your fingers in two just before the bottoms fell out of them. Ohhhh those were the days when I was young and innocent!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
